Hola! I’m Emily Knapp, a fourth-year at Wartburg College majoring in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Spanish. Tonight we participated in a Vigil near the ICE facility here in Denver. We stood along the roadside with signs expressing our belief toward the immigration policies in this country and the treatment of undocumented persons. Signs included that of “No human is illegal,” “Close GEO,” and “85% of detainees are considered non-criminal,” etc. We then proceeded to march around the ICE facility and sign/chant words of inspiration and encouragement. As a group, we threw flower seeds on the sidewalk in front of the facility as an exemplification of hope. Those involved in the Vigil were given the opportunity to speak about immigration issues and discuss the topic in general along with what they wished for this country and/or those who have suffered injustice in this country because of their race. A woman who had been detained in the facility for 34 days spoke about her experience and how she was separated from her 3 year old child during the stay. The woman was detained due to being an “illegal immigrant” in this country when she was working two jobs to provide for her family as her husband had been diagnosed with cancer and she had a small child to provide for.  The Vigil was very eye-opening and put the issue of immigration into perspective even further as we all had a place in our hearts for this issue as it hit home during the raids at Postville. We left with the hope of educating people of the injustice in this country and continuing to help those who do not have a voice.
